Straighten Natural Hair with the InStyler

Image
I decided to give straightening my hair another go. Its been so long I was definitely out of practice! First, I washed my hair using Miss Jessie's Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo and conditioned with their Creme de la Curl Cleansing Creme (which was buy one get one free!). I used Kinky Curly's Knot Today as a leave in. Second, I sectioned my hair and applied Beyond the Zone Smooth Criminal Thermo Protect Spray. I then blow dried using a paddle brush. Lastly, I sectioned my hair and used Isoplus's Pressing Oil before using the InStyler to straighten. I did cut my hair to even the layers out. I am pleased with my turn out!! I have managed to keep it straight for about 3 weeks but I am going back to my curls because I don't want any damage to my hair.

Halloween Natural Hair

Image
Halloween was a treat! It was so much fun playing with my hair and it looks good on a witch lol. I did a normal twist out then used blue can spray to give it that witch look. Loads of fun! Happy Halloween!

Straightened My Hair After 2 Years

Image
Soooo...I finally decided to straighten my hair after 2 years! I was long overdue for a trim to even my hair and get rid of some pesky split ends. It was a lot easier to cut my hair straight than curly as I sometimes do. I used the InStyler and it worked great. It lasted a whole 4 days! lol. Southern humidity is a booger :( Anyway, I received great compliments and was pleased to see my hair in a healthy state. I couldn't wait to see my hair curl back up because I was a little worried about it returning to its natural curl pattern. Anywho, here is what it looked like after wetting. Back to normal!

Hot Summer Days

Image
Summer is officially here in the South! 90 degrees and then some! I have primarily kept my hair in protective styles the entire summer. With this mini two strand twist, I co-washed and used As I Am's Twist Defining Cream. It turned out nicely!

Tip of the Day: Transitioning

Image
Source More and more women are deciding to let go of their chemical relaxers. I get a lot of women that approach me and have questions about the process because they are interested. The number one question I get is "How did you do it?" So, here are a few tips: 1. Patience this is not a quick and easy process for most. If you are not comfortable yet with the BIG CHOP please DON'T! Keep your long hair as long as you can tolerate 2. Be Gentle the line between your new growth and your relaxed hair is very fragile. Detangle with ease when washing and keep your hair conditioned. 3. Trim keep your ends trimmed to diminish split ends (plus it speeds up your transitioning process to cut little by little). 4. Mask at some point in time it will become noticeable that you have two different textures in your hair and wearing it straight may no longer be an option. Try different curly styles to mask that line such as rods, bantu knots , Curlformers, flexirods, etc. I do

Esperanza Spalding Releases "Radio Song"

Image
Source I was first introduced to Esperanza through the natural hair community. Others may know her as the first jazz artist to win Best New Artist for the 2011 Grammy Awards. However you know her, once you hear her sultry smooth voice and funky jazz fusion tracks....you fall for her. She is at it again and proving to her critics that she deserved the Grammy title. Her latest album, "Radio Music Society", is set to release March 20, 2012. Her debut song, "Radio Song", has that smooth jazzy beat that you find yourself rocking to within seconds of pushing play. The rest of her album does not disappoint. It displays her diversity and talent. Rich with strings, horns, and keys....and lets not forget that voice. I can just lay back and chill to this one. The girl's got talent! Preview "Radio Music Society" at iTunes

Tip of the Day: Hands Out Of Your Hair

Image
Source I know how much we ALL love our luscious curls and kinks, and sometimes its SOOOOO hard to keep our hands out. If you are anything like me you enjoy twirling, pattin', and fluffing your do'. There is a consequence to all that touching.....Pesky Knots!! The correct term for these tiny single strand knots is Trichonodosis.

It can be applied to wet or damp hair for a wash and go. I used it for my twist out. Over the holidays, I received a lot of compliments on how soft my hair looked. My twist out actually lasted a whole 4 days...record breaking! S
