Summer Protective Style

Image
This has been my signature style all summer long. The twists have really helped my hair grow! In this style, I used Organix Coconut Milk Conditioner to co-wash and Komaza Care's Califia Care Leave-in. I also used my rose water/glycerin spritzer to dampen hair when needed, and applied Afroveda's Shea Amla Whipped Butter Cream on my ends when twisting. The flower was purchased from Sally Beauty Supply for $1.90!

Growth Check - Oct 2010 to June 2011

Image
I figured it was time for another growth check. I estimate that I have grown about 3 inches since August 2010....only a guess. I had a little breakage on one side due to over manipulation. I have been doing protective styling ever since. The ponypuff pic shows a good visual of how much my hair has grown. 8 months of growth In the pics below the growth is not that obvious. I placed lines to depict the growth. Of course you have to give in account shrinkage. Nevertheless I'm progressing towards my goal of shoulder lenghth hair with shrinkage! 8 months of growth For more growth checks click here and here

Twist Updo

Image
I sectioned my hair into two sections. Front section I did two strand twists. Second section I did flat twists (got to get used to twisting from the back). You can wear this style with the twists for awhile and then take them out for the "twist out".

Protecting Your Hair From Chlorine

Image
Source Summer days at the pool can be fun and refreshing, but remember to protect you hair from the damaging effects of chlorine. Chlorine sucks the natural oils and sebum from your scalp away, which can produce a dull, damaged look. Your hair can become brittle and break. Here are some steps to take before and after a swim: Before swimming... Wet your hair with regular water and add a leave in conditioner before entering the water Consider wearing a swim cap for protection After swimming... Rinse your hair out thoroughly (do not let hair dry with chlorine) Use a shampoo that contains aloe or glycerin (i.e. Tri-Swim shampoo) Deep condition or hot oil treat

Product Review: Miss Jessie's Curly Buttercreme

Cost: $9.00-$58.00 (according to size) Claim: A a daily moisturizer with a hint of peppermint that tingles the scalp. Hydrates and prevents knotted ends Ingredients: Water, Petrolatum, Glycerin, Mineral Oil, Acetylated Lanolin, Glyceryl Stearate,PEG 100 Stearate, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Panthenol , PEG-8 Dilaurate, Ceteareth-20, Stearyl Alcohol, Triethanolamine, Fragrance, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Disodium EDTA, DMDM Hydantoin, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Orange 4 (C1 1550), Yellow 10 (C1 47005) REVIEW I purchased the 8 oz jar from Target on sale for $22.00 (retail $32). Although that is STILL a bit on the expensive side, I had to give it a try. It has a thick consistency and really does smell like mint. I happen to like mint so I don't mind the smell. It definitely gives a shine. It is a bit to heavy (greasy) for my hair. I think its grea

Natural Diva Spotlight - Cia E.

Image
1. Why did you decide to go natural and how long have you been natural? I decided to go natural for various reasons. One was the desire to find myself and not live through my hair. I also big chopped because I couldn’t stand the thought that I had to constantly press out my hair after receiving a relaxer was just killing me!!! I big chopped on June 7 2010 which would make me 9 months natural! 2. How did you transition? I began to transition without realizing it. At first it was just a stretching mechanism but in mid March I decided to really transition. I used to use sew-ins and just plaint ponytails. I also flat ironed which was a bad thing which I learned. Thankfully, I didn't have much heat damage. 3. What is your regimen? I try to keep a consistent regimen but I am such a flip flopper. But if I were to pinpoint exactly what I do...its simply I listen. This meaning if my hair feels dirty Ill cowash, if its dry I moisturize and so on. But now I see that my hair is starting to

Product Review: Yes to Tomatoes Volumizing Conditioner

Image
I picked this conditioner from Target for $4.48 on clearance. It says it is for fine or limp hair, but for that price, I could not pass it up! Price : $8.99 (regular price) Overview: • 99.6% Natural • Enriched with Lycopene & Dead Sea Minerals • Petroleum, SLS & Paraben Free   Main Ingredients: Nectarines fuse pectin polymers (a naturally occurring sugar) to a lank, limp hair to help create weightless hair volume. Mini Twists

Image
I decided to try my mini twists again the other day, and I can tell you that this won't happen that often! I think it took me approximately 5 hours to finish them and I have already taken them down... tis tis . They were cute while they lasted though. I forgot to bring my Komaza Care pudding, so I ended up using nothing but leave in conditioner. The hair accessory was bought at Target on clearance. It adds a little extra and the headband fits comfortably.

Rose Water and Glycerin Mix

Image
Source I ran out of my rosewater and glycerin pre-mixed spray, so I decided to make my own this time. I purchased Frontier vegetable glycerin and Alwadi rosewater. I used a 4 oz. bottle, put 2 parts rosewater, 1 part aloe vera juice, and about 1 tbs. of glycerin. If you plan to try it, you can play around and do variations to find what does well with your coils. Do not use too much glycerin unless you want sticky hair! Be sure to refrigerate afterwards. This spritzer is a great way to add moisture to your hair between washes. Today I am using it to do dry twists. If you try it, come back and let me know how it worked out for you and your recipe used! Glycerin is great for your hair because it attracts water and water=moisture. Rose water increases bloodflow to the scalp, which promotes hair growth.

Love My Locs - Barbara

Image
at 8 years Why did you decide to grow locs and how long have you been loc’d? I decided to grow locs 10 years ago. It was the final journey for my hair. As a teen, I put my hair through every fad you could think of. Jheri curls, asymmetric bobs, extreme color, and the like. Then when I grew tired of frying my hair, I began to use braid extensions as a way to give my hair a break. Went through the gamut of those as well. Crochet braids ended my extension journey and I wound up with a Foxy Brown afro. That in itself took about eight years. In 2001 I went to Jamaica for a wedding and had my afro done in two strand twists. I had them for 9.5 years and then decided to take them down in 2010. I'm starting a new set now. No pics of the new babies as yet but updates are coming:) at 4 years What is your current regimen? I do a presoak of aloe and coconut oil. I have a large aloe plant in the backyard which I use bi weekly. I scrape out the gel and blend with a little coconut oil

Kamaza Care Califia Care Styling Pudding Review

Image
Cost : $17.50   Claims : Stretch curls and control shrinkage without flaking. Makes hair shine and controls frizz I have been using this pudding to do my twists for about 3 months now and this has been the only one I have used since! I'm not sure how well it controls my shrinkage, but it does everything else it claims. There is no flaky residue, my hair has a healthy shine and it lasts at least a week without frizz when I leave my twists in. It has a slight hold and still keeps my hair soft. If I use it to do a twist out, it will last about 3 days without frizz, but that all depends on how much I manipulate my hair. It is a very light pudding and smells great. The scent is a tropical scent with hints of coconut. I have used half of the jar since November. I love that it is not heavy on my hair. This is a product I will continue to use! Ingredients: Distilled Water, Shea Butter, Aloe Butter, Cocoa Butter, Sunflower Oil Dipalmitoylethyldimonium Chloride (A derivitive

Esperanza Spalding Wins Grammy's Best New Artist

Congrats to jazz musician Esperanza Spalding (and naturalista) for winning Best New Artist at tonight's Grammy Awards. She is the first jazz artist to win the category. She beat out Justin Beiber, Florence in the Machine, Mumford & Sons, and Drake. A surpise to many, but I love her music and talent!

Sassy Natural's Top Moisturizers

Image
Source I get a lot of questions on what I use to keep my hair moisturized. I have made a list of the products I use on a regular or daily basis.

      1.   WATER
There is no better hydrator than water. Don't be shy, your hair loves it!
*Tip : after conditioning, rinse with cool water to lock the moisture into your hair cuticles.
*Tip : I use a (water + aloe vera juice ) spritzer to moisturize between washes

           2.   Coconut Oil
I use coconut oil daily because it is a light oil and a natural anti-humectant

       3.   Jojoba Oil
Light oil and virtually odorless. Great for your hair and scalp. This oil is closest to your scalp's natural sebum . I use it in any butter mixture I make

      4.   EVOO
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a great treatment for your hair. It can be used as a pre-poo, a hot oil treatment, and for dry thick hair it can be applied directly to hair for moisture (EVOO is very heavy so use in moderation)

Revisited Knot Today by Kinky Curly

Image
First, let me start by saying, it is COLD and WINDY!!! #NotCool I have had my Knot Today for almost a year now and have not emptied the bottle. I tried using it for a few weeks, but put it down because I noticed nothing special. Then, I used it in fellow YouTuber KimmayTube's leave-in . Last night I decided to try it again. I wet my hair with my water spritzer (water+aloe vera juice) and applied it in sections before twisting. This morning I took them out and they turned out really well...and super soft. It was a rainy day out and endured the mist. This pic was taken at the end of the day. Guess I will bring it back to use now!

Love Our Natural Hair Community!

Image
It has been almost 9 months since I chopped my hair off and joined the natural hair community! I must say I am really enjoying my journey. I absolutely LOVE how close our community is. I find myself talking to other naturals constantly. Whether it’s the grocery store, the gym, or work…we are everywhere lol. What I find amazing is that we admire and inspire one another. I never really experienced this when I was relaxed. Sure, I received compliments and a question or two about what I do to my hair, but never to this magnitude. We never had “relaxed hair” meet and greets! There weren’t product swaps or “Girl, where did you buy your Pump It Up?” I think there is a deeper significance to this whole natural thing. I think it represents empowerment for many. More importantly, it brings unity. It’s great to mingle with other ladies upon the basis of hair, but escape into a world of other meaningful topics. Politics, debates, careers, society, relationships, networking…the list goes on.

Natural Diva Spotlight - Sabrina

Image
 1. Why did you decide to go natural and how long have you been natural? My husband and I along with my two kids left New Orleans because of Hurricane Katrina. I Was worried about my hair falling out from perming since I was moving from an extremely humid climate to a dry one. The last perm I had was in August 2005. I’m just at around 5 ½ years natural. 2. How did you transition? POORLY!!! I wouldn’t adivse anyone to transition the way I did. I didn’t have a clue what the heck I was doing and my hair was not happy with me for it. I wore wigs, weaves and braids all the while still using relaxed hair products. I did that for about 3 years before I woke up, embraced my curls and learned what I needed to know to have healthy hair. I also do the BC around that time but didn’t have a clue that it was called that. I just cut the remainder of the perm along with a lot of damage. 3. What is your regimen? I am a wash and go queen! I co-wash in the shower about 4 or 5 times a we

Guest Blogger: To Old To Be Natural?

Image
Source Guest Blogger Sabrina writes: OK, I turned 40 last year and it's only been five years I've been relaxer free but only two years I've been completely Natural and nurtured my curls. Now, I was little in the 70's and by the time I was a teen relaxers were BIG BUSINESS and living in humid ass Mississippi meant you had a perm if your mother loved you at all! I've never really known my Natural hair and this Natural hair journey has been wonderful and enlightening. Now, it seems that the majority of the Newly Natural are YOUNGER than me. I have no numbers or stats but I'd guess the majority are younger than 30. It might even be younger than 25 but like I said....not real data, but I'm pretty sure that the majority of the Naturals are way younger than my ass. They are stylish, skinny, confident and lovely. I am stylish (for 40), NOT SKINNY, gaining confidence daily and feeling kinda lovely on most days. I don't wanna see this Natural explosion
