Fall Protective Styling: Crochet Braids

Image
I love trying new things with my hair, so I went online and started searching for fall protective styles. I came across all of these YouTube videos on Crochet Braids. Now, I didn't know people still did these and was thinking early 90's when I saw crochet. However, to my surprise, there were some fabulous styles and great tutorials.  I honestly cannot remember the brand of hair I used, but I was in searching for the Freetress brand in the Bohemian Curl. I couldn't locate it at my local hair supply store, so I picked out the equivalent in Water Wave Curl. I got two packs of 1b and one pack of 1b/30 blend.

Straighten Natural Hair with the InStyler

Image
I decided to give straightening my hair another go. Its been so long I was definitely out of practice! First, I washed my hair using Miss Jessie's Super Slip Sudsy Shampoo and conditioned with their Creme de la Curl Cleansing Creme (which was buy one get one free!). I used Kinky Curly's Knot Today as a leave in. Second, I sectioned my hair and applied Beyond the Zone Smooth Criminal Thermo Protect Spray. I then blow dried using a paddle brush. Lastly, I sectioned my hair and used Isoplus's Pressing Oil before using the InStyler to straighten. I did cut my hair to even the layers out. I am pleased with my turn out!! I have managed to keep it straight for about 3 weeks but I am going back to my curls because I don't want any damage to my hair.

Tip of the Day: Transitioning

Image
Source More and more women are deciding to let go of their chemical relaxers. I get a lot of women that approach me and have questions about the process because they are interested. The number one question I get is "How did you do it?" So, here are a few tips: 1. Patience this is not a quick and easy process for most. If you are not comfortable yet with the BIG CHOP please DON'T! Keep your long hair as long as you can tolerate 2. Be Gentle the line between your new growth and your relaxed hair is very fragile. Detangle with ease when washing and keep your hair conditioned. 3. Trim keep your ends trimmed to diminish split ends (plus it speeds up your transitioning process to cut little by little). 4. Mask at some point in time it will become noticeable that you have two different textures in your hair and wearing it straight may no longer be an option. Try different curly styles to mask that line such as rods, bantu knots , Curlformers, flexirods, etc. I do ...

Apple Cidar Vinegar Treatment

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a great addition to your hair routine. It’s no secret and its benefits are ancient in use. Hair acidity levels are between 4.5 and 5.5, which is very close to apple ACV (2.9). A lot of the products are heavy alkaline and are harsh on our hair. ACV balances out the pH levels in hair and get rid of the product build up. ACV has also been known to help with dandruff, hair loss, itchy scalp, and hair lice. It can be used once or twice a week or how you see fit. I apply to my hair every third wash. 1. Mix 1 Tbl spoon to 1 cup of warm distilled water. You can use a spray bottle or a squeeze bottle 2. Apply to hair and scalp after shampooing. Cover with shower cap for 30 min to 1 hour 3. Condition afterwards

Olive Oil

Olive oil is great for the hair. It contains the acting antioxidant vitamin E. It leaves your hair stronger and with a beautiful shine. Extra virgin olive oil is always the best to yous because it has been cold pressed and doesn't contain chemicals. You can find extra virgin olive oil just about anywhere these days. Check your grocery store or organic food stores. Here is a great pre-treatment you can follow: Treat it like a hot oil treatment. Sit it into a bowl of warm water for a few minutes Apply oil to dry hair. Be sure to cover scalp as well Afterwards, apply a shower cap and wrap it with a warm towel for approx. 30 min. (or cover with shower cap only and take a shower) Remove cap and preoceed to shampoo and condition as usual BTW, did I mention that you can buy some right here from this site?
