Guest Blogger: To Old To Be Natural?

Guest Blogger Sabrina writes:

OK, I turned 40 last year and it's only been five years I've been relaxer free but only two years I've been completely Natural and nurtured my curls. Now, I was little in the 70's and by the time I was a teen relaxers were BIG BUSINESS and living in humid ass Mississippi meant you had a perm if your mother loved you at all! I've never really known my Natural hair and this Natural hair journey has been wonderful and enlightening.

Now, it seems that the majority of the Newly Natural are YOUNGER than me. I have no numbers or stats but I'd guess the majority are younger than 30. It might even be younger than 25 but like I said....not real data, but I'm pretty sure that the majority of the Naturals are way younger than my ass. They are stylish, skinny, confident and lovely. I am stylish (for 40), NOT SKINNY, gaining confidence daily and feeling kinda lovely on most days.

I don't wanna see this Natural explosion as fashion driven but even if it is, I'm here to stay. When I get on Natural hair websites I feel like I'm babysitting! I'm on forums with college students who have no kids and think spending $30 on a jar of hair gel is a crime against nature! Where the hell are the older Naturals? I understand I'm coming into this game in the 7th inning but DAMN!

I honestly don't feel I'm too old to be Natural but I do feel a little left out in some blogs and styles. Nonetheless, I'm here and I'll continue to look at the pics on the blogs of the younguns as they shake their skinny asses in too tight/short/sheer clothes in the clubs they live in till the wee hours of the morning. I ain't clubbin no more and I'm yawning by 11:00 pm as well as getting brats to bed after homework, bath and dinner. I'm a Natural....just a mature one and happy to be in the company of the young ones....

Just wanna see more of us sometimes.

Product Review: Komaza Care's Califia Care Leave In Conditioner

Distilled Water, Dipalmitoylethyldimonium Chloride (A derivative of Palm Oil), Aloe Vera Butter, Shea Butter, Algae Extract, Behentrimonium, Aloe Vera Juice, Shea Nut Oil, Soybean Oil, Nettles, Horsetail, Rosemary, Peppermint, Marshmallow, Polyquaternium 10, Quaternium 87, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin B3, Pro vitamin B5, vitamin B6, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Cinnamon Cassia.
pH Balance 4.5

I purchased this product from 3 Sister's Beauty Supply in Plano, TX. They were having a buy 1, get 1 sale (Whoopee!). Regular price was $16.

It has a sort of tropical scent and has a medium consistency. Not to thick and not too thin. I love it! Its a great detangler and makes my hair soft. The pH Balance is 4.5, which is pretty good (hair is 4.5-5.5). The ingredients are good as well. Overall great conditioner. I will continue to use this product

SN: I wasn't sure what the name meant so I researched it and I think that Califia is a fictional African American Queen in California centuries ago....correct me if I'm wrong

Natural Diva Spotlight- Kristen

1. Why did you decide to go natural and how long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 15 months now. I decided to go natural because having a relaxer was high-maintenance. I have two daughters so having to do 3 heads was very time consuming. I wanted the versatility and freedom that could only be achieved with natural hair! Now if I'm short on time I don't have to worry about whether or not I'll have time to style my hair...I can water spritz or saturate and towel blot my hair and I'm out the door!

2. How did you transition?
I wasn't bold enough to do the BC. So I gradually grew out my relaxer and received regular trims-every 6 weeks until it was allllllll gone! I made an attempt to transition once before and about 4 months into it I decided to get a relaxer and my hair broke off. So the last time I decided to transition I knew there was no going back. I did my research and went full speed ahead!

3. What is your regimen?
I clarify monthly with a clarifying shampoo, deep condition bi-weekly, and co-wash about 4-5 times a week. Sulfate free shampoos work best with my hair. My hair is as healthy as the day I was born!! lol, seriously!

4. What are 4 products you use regularly?
Products I cannot live without: Taaliah Waajid's African Healing Oil! After a shampoo and conditioner, or a co-wash I can get by with just the oil and no other products. I generally use Giovanni moisturizing shampoo/cond or Burt's Bees moisturizing shampoo/cond.

5. What advice would you give to someone transitioning or a new natural?
To anyone transitioning I would say, everyone's hair is different. The most difficult part of transitioning and what can be the most discouraging aspect is determining which products works best for your particular hair type. It takes a little bit of experimentational trial and error. But, it's well worth it! It is important to research natural hair and natural hair products before deciding to transition. Check out as many blogs as possible! It's fun! Learning about others who have taken the step into the natural world is eye-opening and exciting!! And to be a part of that world offers a unique experience that more and more people are desiring to be a part of!

6. Is there anything else you want to add?
I love my natural me!

Thanks for including me in your success Ms. Sassy;-) I'm loving your vision!
